Dhvani – Enabling children to hear clearly

Avashya Foundation helps children from marginalised communities with hearing tests and Cochlear surgery.

Having a hearing impairment could drastically alter the quality of one’s life and affect one’s chances of earning a livelihood. Early identification of any issues involving the ears can go a long way in preventing or even curing the ailment. However, not many can afford the regular check-up needed to get their children screened for ailments.

To enable families from vulnerable backgrounds to have access to regular ear treatment, we launched Dhvani – an ongoing project with Vipla Save the Children Foundation India. The aim of this project is to identify children at risk of hearing loss and enable early identification and treatment for them and provide intervention for children (0-3 years) with hearing impairment through audiological management, therapeutic interventions and a school readiness program at the centre.

Consequently, various camps and awareness programmes were conducted. Regular follow-ups were done to ensure the children get tested, as parents were wary on account of the pandemic. After the check-up with the audiologists, those children who had hearing issues were given treatment and even supported with surgery.

47 children were provided with therapy and audiology services and five children are being supported to undergo the Cochlear surgery. A therapist is also following up with the families on a regular basis for pre & post-surgery therapy, counselling & fund raising requirements.

Even though a pandemic prevents people from seeking medical help for other ailments, we are committed to helping them with the required medical care by taking the healthcare resources to the community.
