Allcargo helps Dhamni villagers find sustainable livelihood through farming

Tribal farmers of Dhamni in Maharashtra were supported in their farming endeavours by Allcargo after they lost their livelihood due to COVID-19.

Since 2019, when Avashya Foundation adopted Dhamni village in Raigad District, Maharashtra, significant changes are visible and are in process. Aimed at having a 360 degree transformation of the village, various initiatives have been undertaken in the spheres of health, education, women empowerment, housing, environment sanitation and livelihoods.

While significant progress has been made over the past two years across various parameters, the COVID-19 pandemic was a setback.  The pandemic has affected the marginalised the most across the world. The tribal community of Dhamni was no different since community members were unable to find employment as daily wage labourers. Those who turned to farming, found the cost of seeds to be outside their reach. Avashya Foundation provided them with seeds for farming so that they could grow crops. For this firstly, a farmer group was set up to distribute the seeds.

The efforts of last year have borne fruit this year. Crops stand tall and green in this area and farmers are now taking their harvest of rice and vegetables to nearby towns to sell to earn their livelihood. Agriculture could also be a sustainable source of income for them if they continue to farm.

Avashya Foundation is happy to support the community in Dhamni with sustainable solutions for their problems, so that they can be empowered to support themselves tomorrow.
